OUR STUDENTS BECOME RESEARCHERS

We are proud of our students and their families. From day one they realize that learning a language goes parallel to the development of their personality and high self-esteem. Every time they speak, listen , and write our students “are not only engaged in an exchange of information; they are organizing a sense of who they are and how they relate to the social world ” ( Norton , 2014 )

They realize that they have a voice! They are important members of the school community and while studying the language they are helped to take ownership of their learning.

From as early as seven years of age and while reaching the Proficiency class, our students are given a wide range of opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and talents, analyze, evaluate and create.

After years of experimenting with collaborative Action Research we are taking even bolder steps to engage our students in regular projects in the form of flipped classroom activities, presentations, debates, peer teaching and classroom research projects.

British teachers of the school advocate that Agnes Katsianos school students excel in all aspects of the language and exude confidence in their conversational skills.

Miss Fiona wrote:

“After teaching students from across the world , I must admit that Katsianos school  students are the most hardworking and autonomous “

This is illustrated by a number of tasks and projects our students undertake every year and here is an example of the student – led research program run in our school in 2017.

70 classes undertook a nine month project entitled ” WHAT DOES LEARNER AUTONOMY MEAN TO YOU? “

At the end of this project our students gave THEIR OWN DEFINITIONS OF LEARNER AUTONOMY which we discuss and consider for our school development.

Here is one of these definitions composed by 13-14 year old students:

WHAT IS LEARNER AUTONOMY FOR US?

“Learner Autonomy is our willingness to undertake independent learning in terms of selecting materials and seeking out learning opportunities using technology and different learning resources. It is our love to share our learning experiences outside the classroom with our classmates and teachers and make ongoing progress”
